When I look at the news, social media, or overhear conversations as I people watch, so often the focus seems to be on the negative, lack, shortcomings, or failures of those around us or ourselves. This skewed view leads to a mindset that focuses on diagnoses, limitations to physical or mental abilities for me, and a sense of defeat and hopelessness for my clients. This article reminds me of the alternative that leads me to reflect on our purpose as clinicians and my reason for entering the counseling field. The reminder is that I am more than my depression, ADHD, trauma, and Crohn's disease; while I may live with mental and chronic illness, I am mentally and physically healthy in so many other ways, and so are my clients.
